EndNote offers several options for de-duplicating titles. The key here is to choose the right settings.
Settings
Under Edit -> Preferences -> Duplicates, you can set how EndNote should de-duplicate titles. You can de-duplicate several times, with different settings.
- Choose the default option "Ignore spacing and punctuation"
- Author, Year, Title, Secondary Title (Journal)
- Reliable option, allowing you to de-duplicate without verification. Works best in conjunction with a journals list (tips&tricks)
- Author, Year, Title, Pages
- Reliable option, allowing you to de-duplicate without verification. But does not work when there are differences in page notation
- Author, Year, Title
- This option finds most duplicates, but also runs the risk of publications being incorrectly labeled as duplicates. Therefore, best to apply it as the last option and with verification
De-duplication, with verification
Go to Library -> Find Duplicates to find duplicates in EndNote. EndNote displays the sets of duplicate titles one by one and lets you choose which ones you want to keep.
De-duplication, automatic
Go to Library -> Find Duplicates to find duplicates in EndNote. EndNote shows the first duplicate set of titles.
- Now select cancel.
- You will now see in the duplicates folder that all second (or higher) versions of a publication are selected.
- Click delete to remove the selected references
De-duplication, during import
You can already specify if you want to import duplicate titles when importing a set of publications from a database. You can choose from:
- import all
- discard duplicates
- import into duplicates library
- This is another form of automatic, unverified de-duplication
